In light of today, I will start off with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at moments of challenge and controversy.” It is in these moments that define us. These are the moments that make us grow. If you always stay inside your circle, how can you grow? Your circle can never get better if you don’t venture out. Chances are high that you’re going to be uncomfortable, but that’s where growth happens and that’s where success is located. science fiction
If you want to be a writer, you have to be a reader as well. You might want to transcend a genre, but in order to do that you need to understand other genres. You might love Old Western Novels and dislike Fantasy Novels, but in order to transcend your genre, you have to do things that are uncomfortable. When it comes to being a true leader, you have to overcome an insecurities you have had in the past. When I was younger and in school, I used to hate asking questions. I always felt that it would make me look weak. It took me awhile to learn that asking questions didn’t make you weak, but strong. It meant that you understood your weakness and you were aiming to make it stronger. Also, growing up I’ve always been an introvert. I’ve been reserved in expressing how I felt and quiet and in the background. I learned that leaders can’t do that. Successful leaders need to be both introvert and extrovert in the sense they need to have great listening skills and they have to have the courage to stand up for what is right. They need to speak for a group of people. That made me uncomfortable at first, but with my profession and now that I’m a husband and father, I have to step up. I have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
If you want to be successful, if you want to make the next step, you need to get out of your comfort zone. Stop sticking to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. If can out run everyone on a basketball court, but you can’t make any shots, how will you earn your minutes on the court? Work everyday and better yourself. While you’re sleeping and staying comfortable, someone else is pushing themselves, making themselves uncomfortable, pushing through the pain and being tired and they’re going to make their dreams a reality. Meanwhile, you’re going to be envious of all the successful people around you wondering why you aren’t in their position! Go out and stop making excuses!
