Luck=Preparation + Opportunity

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to discuss what luck truly means.  A lot of times when we see other people getting what they want or becoming successful we say they have all luck.  We never credit the individual with putting in the time and effort, but rather look at something illegitimate to give credit to, in order for our psyche to remain untouched.

“Lose Yourself” by Eminem says “Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted, one moment, would you capture it or just let it slip?”  There are a few times in our life where the perfect opportunity arrives.  The perfect opportunity makes us pass up other opportunities so we get the best chance to be successful, but what is the perfect opportunity and when will it arrive?  Opportunities happen all the time for us, but if we aren’t prepared to take advantage of it, then we will never be successful and we will continue to recognize others’ success as luck.

Here’s an example.  Last week I got my business cards in the mail and started handing them out to some people at work over the weekend.  I needed some paperwork signed and the individual said he would only sign it if I gave him a motivational speech because he saw my card.  This caught me off guard a bit and I never prepared myself to be asked to give a speech at any moment.  I was able to recite a quote, but it was someone else’s and not my own.  If I would have been more prepared for something like that, I could have wowed them and increased my audience.  But instead, I get to learn from my mistakes and prepare myself better.  Once I do that and another opportunity arrives, I will be ready and that’s when I will have luck.

If you want to be successful in life you can’t point the finger at an illegitimate cause to make yourself feel better.  You need to be honest with yourself and continue to grind. Prepare yourself and you, too, will have luck.  Be prepared for everything and don’t give up.

What’s Your Excuse?
